Shahzad retained for England second Test squad
Article posted 01-Jun-2010

Ajmal Shahzad has been retained in England’s squad for the second Test against Bangladesh as they attempt to wrap up a series victory at Old Trafford.

The Yorkshire all-rounder was called up for the opening Test victory at Lord’s but lost out to Middlesex’s Steve Finn for the final selection, who responded by claiming the man-of-the-match award by claiming nine wickets in the match.

Shahzad’s hopes of making his debut at Old Trafford, however, have been increased by Yorkshire team-mate Tim Bresnan being ruled out with a stress fracture to his left foot. England have called up Ryan Sidebottom to an otherwise unchanged squad, but Shahzad remains an option having already impressed the selectors enough to make debuts at Twenty20 and one-day international level this winter.

"We can be very pleased with a number of aspects from the first Test at Lord's resulting in a comprehensive win against Bangladesh," claimed England’s National Selector, Geoff Miller.

"It's very unfortunate that Tim Bresnan will miss the second Test through injury as his bowling benefitted from five days of Test cricket during the Lord's Test and he would have been looking forward to getting more overs under his belt at Old Trafford.

"It does, however, provide Ryan Sidebottom with an opportunity to push for Test selection following his outstanding performances in the World Twenty20. The entire bowling unit will be better for the overs bowled during the first Test and looking to further build on this in Manchester."

England squad for 2nd Test v Bangladesh: Andrew Strauss (Middlesex, capt), James Anderson (Lancashire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Steve Finn (Middlesex), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Kevin Pietersen (Hampshire), Matt Prior (Sussex), Ajmal Shahzad (Yorkshire), Ryan Sidebottom (Nottinghamshire), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire).
