Somerset Duo Prove Their Value
Article posted 30-Sep-2009

Marcus TrescothickSomerset pair Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter have filled two of the top three positions in the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s list of the most valuable players in the 2009 season.

Former England opener Trescothick topped the poll after scoring 2,934 runs in all competitions this summer, and finished comfortably ahead of Durham all-rounder Ian Blackwell, his former Somerset team-mate, despite an impressive 1,314 runs and 69 wickets in his debut season for his new county.

Positions in the list are decided on a points-based system, which takes into account each players’ batting, bowling and fielding performances and also assesses their captaincy skills, the number of games they have played and how many they have won.

Fellow International Sports Management stablemate Kieswetter also earned his reward for a consistent season by finishing third after scoring 2,124 runs and completing 67 catches and 11 stumpings.

South African-born Kieswetter emigrated from his homeland three years ago in search of a county contract and is tipped to force his way into England contention once he qualifies early next year.
